The Words You Say Often Determine Your Day

Proverbs 15:4, “A wholesome tongue is a tree of life…”

Many of us were raised with the adage, “Stick and Stones may break my bones but names will never heart me.” Though words may not break a bone they certainly can break the heart. The Bible warns us of the capacity of the tongue; within this little member is the power of death and life.

In today’s verse, the Bible states that, “A wholesome tongue is a tree of life…” A wholesome tongue is a tongue that speaks truth and life, seasoned with grace and charity. By this kind of tongue, I am blessed and empowered and others are comforted, encouraged, and instructed by finding shade and protection under its care.

Proverbs 15 gives us many examples of life being spoken.

Vs. 1, A soft answer turns away wrath…
Vs. 2, The tongue of the wide useth knowledge aright…
Vs. 7, The lips of the wise disperse knowledge…
Vs. 23, A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth…
Vs. 23, A word spoken in due season, how good it is…
Vs. 26, The words of the pure are pleasant words…

In examining our tongue we discover that our tongue is connected to our heart. “The heart of the righteous studieth to answer.” Perverseness in the tongue, “…is a breach in the spirit.” The words we use, words of death or life have an impact on those around us. They also reveal what is in our heart. What do your words say about your heart? A wholesome tongue stems from a godly heart. Fill your heart with Christ and your words will be filled with life.
